Dear Kari,

I have found a pearl weighing 5.5kg (12lbs 2oz) which I think it was from a Giant Clam (Tridacna Gigas) - this information about giant clam pearl I got from your website and some others in a little research I made from the internet.

I was wondering if you could assist me in verifying this finding and to also understand the potential market value of this large pearl.

Grateful if you could kindly inform us to how we could potential arrangement for the verification and valuation of the pearl.

Thank you and we look forward to your assistance.

Best regards,

Teddy

Hi Teddy,

That's big. Converted to pounds, it's 12.1 pounds...only a tridacna gigas could grow a pearl that large. I'm assuming you no longer have the shell, right? Otherwise, you would know for sure it came from a giant clam. You'll need to have it tested by experts to confirm in fact that it is a pearl. This 5 pound giant clam pearl is offered at Bonham's auction on December 6, 2009. The estimated price is around $400,000. The shell it was found in is also being offered with it for sale. With a confirming certificate, your item would be a valuable collector's or museum piece. Thank you for sharing.
