Quahog Pearl Earrings

by Polly Foley
(Yarmouth MA 02673)

In 1990 I brought a quahog pearl to Barnstable Jewelers in Hyannis, MA to have it made into a pendant. The jeweler (Elliot) broke it in half so he took it upon himself to make earrings from the two halves and set them in sterling.

I had no idea what it was worth at the time until I saw the article about the Florida couple
that found the pearl in his order of clams.

My pearl is aprox. 7 to 8mm. Is there any worth in my earrings?

Thank You!

Current Market Value

Hi,

I don't know how this price would relate to your pearls, since they are halves...I'm sure it would depend on the setting as well.

I talked with a fellow today who pays about $200/carat for purple or lavender Quahog pearls. For white clam pearls the price is $50+/carat.

These natural pearls are most often sold by weight and other characteristics also count, like shape, condition, color, size.

There are maybe other markets as well, but that is at last one practical price point to consider, if you're thinking about selling your pearl.

Your local jeweler may be able to help you out with finding your pearl's carat weight.
