Tiny pearls found in Swan Mussel, UK

I've been collecting swan mussels from our local river this summer. I knew it was hugely unlikely, but I hoped we'd find some pearls. My three year old daughter was so excited. Imagine my surprise to find these three tiny pearls inside this beautiful swan mussel. The shell too is wonderful and really thick with nacre. I know they have no value because they're so small but what a wonderful adventure souvenir for my little girl.

swan mussel pearls NEW
by: Jorge Costa

Hello Frances, thank you for your prompt reply, sadly you cannot collect shells or pearls from the freshwater mussel in Scotland as it is an endangered specie. I buy pearls from old collections or from one of the two jewellery shops authorized by the Scottish government to sell pearls fished before 1991 If by any chance you find another swan mussel pearl and you want to sell it, please let me know, best, Jorge

Hello Jorge,
I'm sorry, I've already arranged to have them set into a ring. I don't think many swan mussels yield pearls but then they're really tiny.

Where do you go shelling in Scotland? Sounds great!

All best wishes,

Fran.

Hello Frances I never heard before about the Swan Mussel pearls, but I collect Scottish pearls. I'm really interested in having a swan mussel pearl, since they're also from the UK, would you consider selling one to me? Best, Jorge

Wow, imagine that!
by: Kari

Hi Frances, Wow, imagine that, especially that you were hoping to find some pearls! And neat that your little three year old daughter can start on her love for natural pearls by finding some with her mom.

You are right, that they wouldn't have much monetary value but the adventure and the keepsakes they make are priceless in themselves.

I've never heard of a swan mussel. I don't think we have them in the USA or if we do, they must have a different name.

Thanks for sharing your new found treasures!
