While the main brand-name of Mikimoto only uses the top 3-5% of all pearls produced in Japan, the next 10% is also used by them for a lower-priced division which is known as their "Blue Lagoon" line. This discount jewelry is also known as Gordon's, Sea Magic, and Zales.

These Mikimoto pearls discount brands aren't to be confused with the Mikimoto brand, but represent high quality at a lower price and have a thick nacre and good luster.

More about Mikimoto

Now, I thought you'd enjoy reading a little bit about Mikimoto...so here goes...

The 1930's saw a pearl popularity explosion. With the explosion, low quality pearls also showed up...something that Mikimoto desperately didn't want.

To maintain quality, he established the "Japan Pearl Producers Association" in 1932. To demonstrate his disdain for the sale of low quality pearls he once burned, by the shovelful, in front of the Kobe Chamber of Commerce (where he'd get the most international exposure) low quality pearls for a public display.

Here's a quote from an October 31, 1932 TIME magazine article about this day.

"Meanest of tricks is to tell a wealthy woman that the best way to clean her Oriental pearls is to swish them through boiling water. As the pearls heat they will lose their moonbeam lustre, may crack and the wealthy lady will grow frantic. Yet last week all Japan honored a short, stocky, crinkly-faced old man who had rolled up his kimono sleeves, seized a blunt spade and vigorously shoveled into a fiery furnace 720,000 of his best pearls. Within three minutes they turned to flaky ashes (crystallized lime)."

This article proved that he received the publicity he craved for this moment. All the other accounts of this action, however, said they were low quality pearls, not his "best".

Still today, Japan is known for its high quality pearls.

Eventually, a "Mikimoto Style" began emerging which themes related most often to nature and the four seasons.

Mikimoto had gained high respect for both the positive and negative influences of nature in developing his cultured pearl business.

Mikimoto thought tourism, for example, was mainly for the purpose of helping people appreciate nature.

In establishing the Mikimoto pearls discount with the Blue Lagoon line, his wish to see every woman with a pearl necklace has become closer to reality.

The island of Ojima, where Mikimoto had his first successes with culturing pearls was renamed to "Pearl Island," Now, however, it is called,"Mikimoto Pearl Island."

Mikimoto's hometown, Ise-Shimer, or "Hometown of Pearls," was enhanced by the donations of Mikimoto's own finances to improve roads, waterways, tunnels, railroads and the addition of plenty of flowers and trees along Miyuki Shrine Road.

This inventive, creative person died at age 96 while maintaining a simple life-style even amid world travel and fame.
