Found in a box of donations - Are these pearls?

While at work going through a box of donated belongings I found a beaded necklace containing 21 large irregular shaped pearls on it. I've tried to research them but am still not quite sure what kind they are can you help me to identify them please.

I think they are shells
by: Kari

Hi, Thanks for posting photos of your finds.

From taking a look at the photos I would say that they are polished pieces of shell. There is a particular part of shells that is very lovely and often that part was cut out and polished.

I wouldn't have known this but Muscatine, the city I live near, is famous for shelling and an old timer told me that often the thick part by the hinge would be cut and polished.

To me that's what these look like, but show them to folks near you and see what they think.

They do not look like pearls but certainly are lovely.
