Pearl’s Place Restaurant

Whenever I see a restaurant advertising “down home southern cooking”, my mental flag immediately starts flapping in the wind. This is mainly because the majority of these places serve up heaping helpings of piping hot cholesterol laden, high blood pressure probable, diabetes potential, obesity impending..food.

Not so with Pearl’s Place.

Pearl’s Place, located in the center of Bronzeville, reminds you of someplace your parents might have taken you as a kid. You know, homey atmosphere, friendly people, security..cheap. Now I’m not saying that Pearl’s Place doesn’t serve up fried, smothered or blackened food – I’m saying the menu has more to offer than the enemies of my people.

A friend and I ducked into Pearl’s Place a couple of weeks ago as a last minute breather from the huge crowds and congested traffic emanating from the Bud Billiken Parade. My friend didn’t want to go in because he thought the restaurant might be a dive. I didn’t want to go in because the restaurant looked as if it was attached to a motel.

Black Pearl Golf Course

ROATAN, Honduras -- Pristine Bay Resort and Black Pearl Golf Course, one of the western Caribbean's most-anticipated residential and resort communities and championship golf courses, announce eight luxury villas will be ready for occupancy by January, with another 28 coming online by mid-2010.

Starting at $600,000, many villas offer spectacular golf course and ocean vistas. The Black Pearl, Roatan's first golf course, will open nine holes for play in February, and the full 18 in April. "Our strong year continues and further validates that Pristine Bay Resort is a sought-after location for primary and vacation homes and a relative value when compared with other resort golf developments in the U.S. and Caribbean," says Mario Toriello, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Pristine Bay Resort. "With the completion of Roatan's second cruise dock, direct flights from the U.S. to the island's international airport, and our location along the Meso-American Barrier Reef, we anticipate a stellar 2010."

Pearl Harbor Rolling Memorial

Two months ago at the Vegas Valley Book Festival for Kids at the Historic Fifth Street School, I had the distinct pleasure and honor to meet author Dana Harbaugh. Harbaugh was there with his creation and source of inspiration, Metal of Honor; a customized 2009 Harley Davidson Cross Bones motorcycle.

Collaborating with some of the best customizers in Las Vegas: Sandy Steiner of Chrome Fusion for the chrome work; Dwight Purcell of Purcellz Customz for the custom paint job; and Shirley Zanelli of BadAss seats for the custom leather seat, his vision of a rolling Pearl Harbor memorial slowly came to life.

Dana explained that the bike was an unintentional side project that came about since he became the official photographic historian for the Pearl Harbors Survivors Association. Since becoming an honorary member in 2000 he has taken more than 26,000 photos to be compiled into a book Pearls of Honor: Their Duty to Remember.

Pearl Harbor Sacrifices Remembered

Dark storm clouds held back the rain from pounding the pavement until the end of the Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Ceremony in downtown Bakersfield. A small crowd gathered before the Veteran's Memorial Monday afternoon to honor loved ones who served and lost their lives 68 years ago.

"It was kind of divine intervention. God might have opened up the skies. I think it was supposed to be like that," said South High teacher and Highland High football coach Marc Sandall, who organized and emceed the ceremony.

The gloomy weather did not stop those who came to remember the historic day. The Associated Veterans Honor Guard participated in the rifle salute, while widows of Pearl Harbor survivors attended the ceremony to remember their husbands.
