Veil of Pearls by MaryLu Tyndall

Prolific author MaryLu Tyndall is well known for writing romantic adventures set in the age of pirates. In Veil of Pearls she brings her readers back to the familiar setting of Charleston, S.C., and introduces them to a new time (1811) and a pair of characters who are both are playing a part to ensure their survival.

Adalia Winston is … not her real name. But in order to escape Sir Walter and the degrading prison of slavery in Barbados she not only takes on that new name but finds passage to Charleston and uses her knowledge of herbal remedies to become an employee of a local doctor.

Adalia's light skin allows her to deny her heritage and move about Charleston without fear of landing on the auction block. But when she attracts the attention of Morgan Rutledge, the pampered second son of a Southern aristocrat – and allows him to capture her heart – she fears more than ever that the truth will come out and that Morgan, destined to someday be a slave owner, will reject her.

Morgan is determined to see Adalia accepted into Charleston society, to receive his father's blessing to court her and, eventually, marry her. But his family is against the match. After all, Adalia Winston is a common tradeswoman. To court her will do nothing but bring disgrace to the family name.
