South County Rhode Island Quahog Pearl Found

I have been an avid fisherman and shell fisherman for over 30 years. Throughout this time I have harvested many little necks, cherry stones and quahogs. I have never experienced finding a quahog pearl until September 3, 2025. After harvesting a little over 1/2 peck I decided to make a chowder and stuffies for a family party that we were having. My wife was the lucky person that found the pearl in her chowder after chewing on it first. When she asked if I added pebbles to the chowder I asked her what she meant. She handed me the “pebble” and it turned out to be a beautiful dark pearl with a dark band on one side and on the other side a white to lavender color. We do not know if it is worth anything so we figured we would share our story with you. As a funny side note, I was given the nickname “Clambo”, by a very snarky old Italian gentleman about 15 years ago because he would always see me heading out to the local clam beds to harvest clams during our time at his campground. To me clamming is a great way to escape and find solitude. Thank you Kari for proving a forum to share this awesome find. Let me know if you are interested in this find.

Oh wow, lovely quahog pearl
by: Kari

Dear "Clambo",

Oh, my, after 30 years of enjoying fishing and eating quahog clams, I'd say it was about time for you to find a pearl! And you (your wife) found a gorgeous dark purple pearl. I'm glad she didn't swallow it.

Thanks for the pictures on the measuring stick next to the dime to help us see the size.

These do have monetary value and of course value as treasured keepsakes too.

Take a look at this page to find one comparable so you can get an idea of retail value. Quahog Pearls for Sale

I'm way over here in middle America next to the Mississippi River so don't have access to digging up quahog clams but it would be a real thrill to do so.

I'm sure your chowder and stuffies were delicious. I have eaten stuffies once while visiting Virginia Beach. They were so yummy!

Thank you for sharing your story and for the kind compliment about this forum to share about your find.

I do sometimes buy these. You can contact me here and let me know what you'd want for it.

God bless,
Kari
